What is a doula?
Doula is a Greek word meaning 'woman caregiver'. Today the word encompasses a woman who has been trained to provide emotional, physical comfort, labor support, and assistance in obtaining information before, during, and just after child birth for the woman and her husband or partner.
I have met all my birth requriements for DONA and now am currently finishing up paperwork to obtain my DONA certification. Please feel free to visit their site at: http://www.dona.org/
Why is a doula important?
Some clinical research has shown that having a doula can shorten length of labor, reduce the need for pain medication and epidurals, can make the overall birth experience enjoyable and positive, and can reduce the need for medical interventions such as pitoicin, vacuum, forceps, and c-section. Doulas are also a great resource for the family. Having a doula can increase success for breastfeeding, emotional support and well being.
Am I the doula for you?
I recommend you fill out my client information on the Contact page of my website. I will be happy to talk to you and let you get to know me a little better before you decide if I am the fit for your family. As your doula I will provide information to you about birthing, breastfeeding, and anything else you may need information on. Since I am a licensed massage therapist I will also teach your partner some basic massage techniques to help make you comfortable, like how to give a foot massage and a shoulder rub. I can also instruct you and your partner on some basic infant massage techniques to further enhance the bonding between baby and your family.
I also work with two awesome ladies at Rhythm Sisters Doula services. Jennifer Stone is a LPN and is a CAPPA trained child birth educator and a DONA trained doula. Selena Wooly is a L.A.C, an Eastern Asian Medical Practitioner. You can visit their website at www.rhythmsistersdoula.com
